Christmas Spirit Christmas Cards. Top
In the sprit of Christmas, Stevens Correctional Center and the Department of Health and Human Resources for McDowell County combined their means to provide the DHHR office with nearly three hundred handmade Christmas cards to distribute among their clients. The staff and inmates alike worked almost daily for three weeks to produce the large number of handmade cards. We fully intend to make this event an annual one. We hope to start sooner and work longer to produce many more cards for the DHHR office and hopefully more local organizations.

McDowell County Corrections, working together with the Welch Lions Club, donated two live Christmas trees, trimmed with lights and stands to two local organizations. The Paul Miller Home Society, that deals mostly with at risk youths, received one of the trees. SAFE, which provides transitional housing and support for women of domestic violence and their children, received the other tree. The correctional facility delivered both of the trees in the early part of December.
Over two months the McDowell County Correctional Center collected items for the Hands of Hope ministry. Hands of Hope provides services and support for low income families and the community in general. Items collected included school supplies, clothing in all sizes, children’s books, infant needs, children’s toys, stuffed animals, and various other household items.
Crime Victim Awareness. Top
On April 22, 2010 the McDowell County Correctional Center held the first annual Crime Victims Awareness program. The program was designed to promote community awareness. Guest Speaker Sid Bell, McDowell County Prosecuting Attorney, remarked on the progress victim services had made over his twenty years in the criminal justice system. Representatives from the McDowell County Sherriff’s Department and the SAFE House were in attendance as well as a large number of the correctional facilities staff. At the end of the program nearly 300 red balloons were released in remembrance of victims of crime. Guest were invited to place a personal message on a balloon for anyone they personally knew that was a victim of crime.
